Anonymous hacker group attacks Thai websites over Koh Tao murder verdict

Hackers associated with the group ‘Anonymous’ attacked the websites of some 300 of Thailand’s justice and government agencies over the last three days, in response to the sentencing to death of two Burmese migrant workers last month, who are accused of murdering two British tourists on a Thai island in September 2014.

The verdict brought criticism from around the world, with claims that the two men were tortured and forced by police to confess a crime they had not committed.

Myanmar announced earlier that it would help to appeal the verdict against it’s two citizens.

The hacking started on Tuesday and continued to early Thursday.

“#Anonymous is supporting the campaign to ask tourists to boycott Thailand until such time that changes are made with the way Thai police handle investigations involving foreign tourists,” according to their Facebook page.

Last week, the cyberactivist group declared war on Thai police by taking down 15 police websites to protest against what it said was the scapegoating of the two Burmese migrants.

Many sites were inaccessible according to local media, but Thai police claims only the home pages were replaced by a graphic, bearing the name of the hacker group, and all sites have now been restored with no data being stolen.

The Court of Justice has insisted that the cyber attacks against Thai court websites would not change the court’s verdict in the Koh Tao murder case.
