At least 11 killed in explosion targeting bus of Tunisian presidential guard

At least 10 were killed on Tuesday in an attack by an explosive device that targeted a Tunisian presidential guard bus in the center of capital Tunis, eyewitnesses told EFE.

According to witnesses’ accounts, which are yet to be confirmed by officials, a suicide bomber blew himself up as the bus passed in front of the old headquarters of the party of ousted dictator, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, in Avenue Mohammed V.

The Tunisian interior confirmed that it was a terrorist attack, given the high number of casualties which have amounted so far to at least 11 deaths.

Ambulances and dozens of security members rushed immediately to the site, which was cordoned off, to start investigations.

Tunisia suffered two jihadists attack in 2015, first in March and then in June.

Both attacks targeted the tourism sector of the country, and caused 60 deaths among foreigners in Tunis and the coastal city of Sousse.

Tunisian security forces announced over the past month and a half that they have dismantled at least 10 jihadist networks across the country, and arrested 50 suspects during security operations.
