Police found a dead man hanging off a bridge in eastern Mexico City, the Federal District Attorney’s Office said Monday.

The body had a bullet wound and was completely covered in bandages, a DA’s office spokesman told EFE.

The unidentified man was left hanging off the steel structure of a bridge over an intersection in the borough of Iztapalapa, the DA’s office spokesman said.

Prosecutors are investigating the killing, the DA’s office spokesman said.

Mexico’s drug cartels frequently hanged the bodies of rivals, often accompanied by messages, off bridges during President Felipe Calderon’s 20062012 administration.

The practice was especially common in northern states like Nuevo Leon, Coahuila and Tamaulipas, but it has been rare in Mexico City.

Officials say that drug cartels do not operate in the capital, where retail drug sales are dominated by small gangs.

The Federal District, however, has been rocked by a number of violent incidents, including the July 31 murders of photojournalist Ruben Espinosa and four women in broad daylight inside a Mexico City apartment.

The killings have still not been cleared up by authorities.
