Bono: I wear sunglasses because of glaucoma

Share

U2 frontman Bono revealed that he wears dark glasses all the time because he has been suffering from glaucoma for the past 20 years, British media reported on Friday.

During a recording session for BBC One, the star said he has had the condition a buildup of pressure in the eyeball, which can damage the optic nerve and lead to blindness if left untreated for around 20 years.

The public generally assumed that wearing sunglasses was a part of Bono’s style and character, but he explained that the accessories are actually used to help improve his condition.

Glaucoma can make the eyes more sensitive to light, which is why some patients wear dark glasses to ease the strain on their vision.

“I am receiving good treatment and am going to be fine,” Bono said. “You are not going to get this out of your head now. You’ll be saying, ‘Ah, poor old blind Bono,’” he joked.

The Irish rock star appeared on the BBC show to promote U2’s new album, “Songs Of Innocence,” which was released for free on iTunes in early September.
