The Los Angeles police and Los Angeles County’s Department of Children and Family Services have opened an investigation of actor Brad Pitt for “verbal and physical abuse” of his children, according to the TMZ Web site, which specializes in celebrity news.

Family sources told the Web site that on Wednesday last week a fight erupted between Pitt, his wife actress Angelina Jolie and their six children during which the actor, presumably while inebriated, allegedly shouted and had acted violently with one or more of the children.

The fight occurred on a private plane and continued after it landed at the airport, where the group was seen by several people, one of whom filed the complaint with the Los Angeles social services department.

Pitt and Jolie have already been questioned by the department, which is also scheduled to speak with the children during the course of the investigation.

This is a matter that the police are also handling, a situation that is routine in cases of alleged child abuse.

According to the same sources, this is the incident that led the actress to file for divorce on Tuesday.

A person close to Pitt told TMZ that the star of “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” has taken the matter very seriously and claimed that he had never abused any of the couple’s children.

People magazine reported that, after the incident, the actor did not return to the family home in Los Feliz, in Los Angeles, where on Wednesday a moving truck was seen.

After more than a decade together and just two years after marrying, Jolie on Tuesday filed for divorce from Pitt and asked for full legal custody of their six children: three adopted, Maddox (Cambodia), Pax (Vietnam) and Zahara (Ethiopia), and three biological, Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne.
