British cyclist Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) has won stage three of the 2016 Tour de France, bringing his total number of individual stage wins up to 28.

After winning the 223.5 kilometer stage between Grenville and Angers, Cavendish’s career record equaled that of legendary French cyclist Bernard Hinault.

However, it was a close call with German cyclist, Andre Greipel (Lotto), who had already raised his hand as a signal of victory before a photofinish showed that Cavendish had won by a matter of millimeters.

Slovakian cyclist, Peter Sagan (Tinkoff), keeps the yellow jersey as the overall leader.

Coming in third place was Frenchman Bryan Cocard, of Cofidis.

The Tour is due to see its biggest stage tomorrow, the second biggest in the Grand Tour (Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España), with a 237.5 km run between Saumur and Limoges.

The fourth stage is largely flat and is expected to favor “sprinters.”
