China’s Meng Suping grabs women’s over-75kg gold

China’s Meng Suping, 27, grabbed gold in the women’s over75kg category at the Rio Olympics.

Meng, who was runnerup at the 2010, 2014 and 2015 World Weightlifting Championships, achieved the greatest success of her career after lifting 130 kilograms in the snatch and 177 in the clean and jerk, a combined total of 307 kilograms, one kilo ahead of North Korea’s Kim Kuk Hyang (306).

USA’s Sarah Robles took bronze with 285 kilograms. She became the only the third American woman to win an Olympic medal in weightlifting after Tara Nott, gold, in 2000 and Cheryl Haworth, bronze, also in 2000.

This is the fourth gold for China in the women’s over75 kilos category after Ding Meiyuan in Sydney 2000, Tang Gonghong in Athens 2004 and Zhou Lulu in London 2012.
