Dorothy’s iconic blue and white gingham dress in the film, The Wizard of Oz, went under the hammer for $1.3 million at Bonhams house Monday.

The final bid surpassed the estimated price of around $1.06 million for the dress Judy Garland wore in her odyssey along the Yellow Brick Road to Oz.

The dress was one of the dozen objects from the classic 1939 musical auctioned by Bonhams among a total of 400 memorabilia from Hollywood’s golden era.

The auction called, Treasures from the Dream Factory, also witnessed a black and white jacket and skirt worn by Marilyn Monroe in the 1953 movie Gentlemen prefer blondes, during the song “When love goes wrong”, with Jane Russell, sell for $350,000.

However, another dress worn by the blonde actress in River of no return, was withdrawn from the auction as it missed the minimum Bonhams estimate of $300,000.

Dozens of memorabilia items belonging to late actress Natalie Wood also went under the hammer, including the Golden Globe she won for the movie From here to Eternity, which fetched $14,000.

A gold and ruby bracelet belonging to the Californiaborn leading actress of Splendor in the grass, was also sold for $20,000.

Minor items from Walt Disney’s 1940 animated film Fantasia and James Bond also found a place in the auction, among others.
