Dutch veteran falls to compatriots in beach volleyball

Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen beat Dutch compatriots Reinder Nummerdor and Christiaan Varenhorst here Monday in the quarterfinals of the Olympic men’s beach volleyball tournament.
Nummerdor and Varenhorst, who finished second in the 2015 world championship, were defeated 2523, 2117.
Rio 2016 marks the third Olympic appearance for the 39yearold Nummerdor.
Brouwer and Meeuwsen will face Brazilian duo Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt in the semifinal.
The Brazilians, seen as the favorites to win gold, advanced with a quarterfinal victory earlier Monday over U.S. team Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena.
