Elizabeth II heads to Malta for Commonwealth meeting

Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom travels on Thursday to Malta to participate in the meeting of the Commonwealth of Nations, to be held from Friday until Nov. 29.

The Queen, 89, will be accompanied by her husband Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, and her eldest son, Prince Charles, heir to the British crown, along with Prime Minister David Cameron, according to official sources.

The Queen and her husband lived in Malta from 19491951 after their wedding in November 1947, before Elizabeth II ascended the throne in 1952 after the death of her father, King George.

The last time the British head of state visited in Malta was in 2007, when she traveled with her husband to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of their wedding.

Elizabeth II will be received by Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and she is scheduled to deliver the opening speech of the meeting on Friday.
