The European Union, or EU, welcomed on Wednesday the political agreement for electoral reform in the Republic of Armenia, signed on Tuesday between the government coalition and opposition parties, calling for the full implementation of the new Armenian electoral legislation.

The agreement is “a positive development supporting the implementation of electoral reform in the country,” said the European External Action Service in a statement.

“The electoral stakeholders in Armenia should now fully implement the new electoral legislation in good faith in order to increase credibility, transparency and public trust in the new electoral system and procedures in line with international standards,” the note added.

The note also underlined that financial assistance from the EU and other international partners, and the commitment of the Armenian government, will allow the implementation of the technical aspects that define the new Electoral Code of the Caucasian nation.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan appointed on Tuesday Karen Karapetyan as prime minister and has now 20 days to form the new Cabinet.
