Former world boxing champion Vitali Klitschko re-elected as mayor of Kiev

The current mayor of Kiev and former world boxing champion Vitali Klitschko, was reelected with 65.5 percent of the votes, after 83.5 percent of votes were counted in the second round of local elections, held on Sunday in Ukraine, according to early official results released on Monday by the Ukrainian electoral authorities.

Klitschko, one of the leaders of the popular uprising in February 2014 which ousted president Viktor Yanukovych, defeated radical Borislav Berioza.

The second round of the local elections was held in almost thirty Ukrainian cities and towns on Sunday, after the first round was held on Oct. 25.

Under a new Ukrainian electoral law, mayors and heads of local administrations are elected by the majority system and legislatures by party lists.
