Hundreds rally in Myanmar against Suu Kyi presidency bid

Share

Hundreds of nationalist protesters gathered in Yangon, Myanmar, Sunday to oppose tweaking the country’s constitution to allow National League for Democracy (NLD) party leader Aung San Suu Kyi to become president.

Around 500 Buddhist nationalists attended the rally, where the majority of participants wore matching white tshirts bearing the slogan: ‘Section 59 of the constitution is untouchable. It must be protected from national security angle’, according to witness reports.

Placards reading, ‘The one who tries to break the Section 59 is our National enemy’, were also on display at the event.

Suu Kyi, whose NLD won a landslide victory in November’s national election, has reportedly been in talks with the outgoing militarybacked administration about the possibility of repealing or suspending Article 59 of the constitution, which bars anyone with foreign family members from becoming president.

As her two sons are British citizens, Suu Kyi is banned by the constitution from taking the post.

Outgoing President U Thein Sein is set to end his term on March 30.
