Islamic State video shows beheading of British captive

Share

The Islamic State released on Friday a video that appears to show the beheading of British aid worker Alan Henning, who was kidnapped last December in Syria.

The clip is similar to those showing the executions of U.S. journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff and Briton David Haines.

“Another Message To America and Its Allies” features the same masked, blackclad executioner as the three previous decapitation videos: a man who speaks English with a British accent.

Henning, a cab driver who took unpaid leave to deliver humanitarian aid in wartorn Syria, is seen kneeling next to the IS militant, who has been dubbed “Jihadi John.”

“I’m Alan Henning. Because of our parliament’s decision to attack the Islamic State, I, as a member of the British public, will now pay the price for that decision,” the captive says.

Addressing the camera, the executioner says: “The blood of David Haines is on your hands (British Prime Minister David) Cameron. Alan Henning will also be slaughtered, but his blood is on the hands of the British parliament.”

British lawmakers voted a week ago to authorize the participation of Britain’s armed forces in airstrikes against IS targets in Iraq.

The video concludes with a glimpse of another hostage, U.S. citizen Peter Edward Kassig, an Iraq War veteran who returned to the Middle East as an aid worker.

“Obama, you have started your aerial bombardment of Shams (Syria), which keeps on striking our people, so it is only right that we strike the necks of your people,” the executioner says.

Henning, 47, was the father of two children.

Cameron and Obama issued statements condemning the murder of Henning and vowing to continue the fight against IS.
