Kazakhstan’s Shvedova, Britain’s Murray advance to Wimbledon 4th round

Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova moved into the round of 16 of Wimbledon for the third time in her career with a 76 (72), 61 victory Saturday over the 2013 finalist, Germany’s Sabine Lisicki.

Shvedova won largely on the strength of her superior consistency, as the erratic German committed 25 unforced errors to the Kazakh’s 12.

The 96thranked Kazakh, who had earlier reached the fourth round in 2012 and 2014, was broken twice in the first set but did not face a single break point in the second set as she cruised to victory in just one hour and 17 minutes.

Next up for the 28yearold Shvedova will be Czech Lucie Safarova, who edged Slovak Jana Cepelova 46, 61, 1210 on Saturday.

Meanwhile, British world No. 2 Andy Murray, the highestranked player left in the men’s draw, cruised into the fourth round with a 63, 75, 62 victory Saturday over Australia’s John Millman.

Murray, who is in top form after winning the Queen’s Club event for the fifth time last month, won his eighth straight match on grass and has not yet lost a set at Wimbledon.

“I thought it was a good match, a lot of long rallies. John moves well and doesn’t make too many unforced errors. I had to be patient,” Murray said afterward.

Asked about American Sam Querrey’s fourset upset Saturday of Serbian top seed and world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, the twotime defending Wimbledon champion and winner of the prior four Grand Slam tournaments, Murray made it clear that he was focused on the task at hand.

“I need to reach the final for that result to have any bearing on my performance at all,” the 2013 champion said.

“Right now everyone expects Novak to win every match he plays the level of consistency he’s shown is amazing, but at the same time it’s impossible to win every single match you play in every tournament,” Murray said.

Next up for the world No. 2 will be the winner of the match between Australian No. 15 seed Nick Kyrgios and Spanish No. 22 seed Feliciano Lopez, who were knotted at a set apiece when their match was suspended due to darkness.

In other results Saturday, bigserving Canadian Milos Raonic, who is in the top half of the draw and would figure to be one of the main beneficiaries of Djokovic’s exit, defeated American Jack Sock 76 (72), 64, 76 (71).

Bigserving Croat Marin Cilic, meanwhile, cruised past Slovak Lukas Lacko 63, 63, 64 and stayed on course for a possible quarterfinal showdown with Swiss world No. 3 and seventime champion Roger Federer. EFE
