London West End Shakespeare production to be broadcast live around the world

A production of Romeo and Juliet is due to be livestreamed around the world from London’s famous West End theaterland to commemorate the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death.

The iconic tragedy is to be performed at the Garrick Theatre and viewed simultaneously on more than 1,200 cinema screens across the globe.

The play, directed by British actor Kenneth Branagh, who has himself starred in many Shakespeare film adaptations, is scheduled to be shown in 520 locations in the United Kingdom and four in Spain, at 7:00 pm GMT on July 7.

The play stars “Game of Thrones” actor Richard Madden as Romeo, and Lily James, known for her title role in the 2015 film adaption of “Cinderella”, as Juliet.

Renowned Shakespearean actor Derek Jacobi plays Mercutio.

James, who plays Juliet, said her brother will be able to watch her performance from Australia.

“The live broadcast is so exciting because it gets the play out of the Garrick Theatre and across the world, opening it up to an entirely different audience,” she added.

The event is part of a nationwide program of various events and festivities marking the 400th anniversary of Britain’s most famous writer, author of the plays “Hamlet” and “Othello” and many others.
