Actor Michael Douglas and his wife, actress Catherine Zeta Jones, were in Israel this weekend for son Dylan Michael’s bar mitzvah at the Wailing Wall.

Douglas and Zeta Jones arrived in Jerusalem on Thursday and stayed at the historic King David Hotel’s presidential suite, which costs $5,400 a night, media reports said.

The couple traveled to Jerusalem for Dylan Michael’s bar mitzvah, the celebration that marks a boy’s 13th birthday, considered the age of religious maturity.

The bar mitzvah took place in one of the tunnels at the Wailing Wall, also known as the Western Wall, the Yediot Aharonot newspaper reported, adding that the tunnel was opened especially for the ceremony.

The family celebrated a bar mitzvah in May in New York but, like many Jews who live outside Israel, wanted to have a ceremony at the site of biblical temple of Jerusalem, the U.S.Israeli daily Forward, which is published once a week in the Haaretz newspaper, reported.

Michael Douglas’s Jewish grandparents, whose name was Danilovich, emigrated to the United States from Belarus in the early 20th century.

Actor Kirk Douglas, Michael’s father and Dylan’s grandfather, embraced his Jewish roots 15 years ago, a decision that may have played a role in having the bar mitzvah in Jerusalem.
