Myanmar President Thein Sein has agreed to meet with opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, to discuss the upcoming massive victory of her party National League of Democracy, or NLD, in Sunday’s general elections, local media reported Wednesday.

“The meeting will be held after the Electoral Commission completes its task,” wrote Information Minister and spokesperson for the President’s office, Ye Htut, on his Facebook account.

Ye Htut has made several statements to both local and international media congratulating Suu Kyi and her party for winning the elections.

With 40 percent of the votes counted so far NLD appears to be on its way to an overwhelming victory as with this percentage it has already won 134 of the total of 440 seats (out of which 110 are reserved for the army) in the Lower House of the Parliament.

Suu Kyi Tuesday sent out invitations to meet President Thein Sein, Lower House Speaker, Shwe Mann and head of the armed forces, Min Aung Hlaing, in order to discuss a “reconciliation”.

Myanmar had been under military regime from 1962 to 2011, when the last military junta transferred power to a related civil government that began implementing political, economic and social reforms.

Suu Kyi, in her fight for a peaceful democracy in the country, spent more than 15 years under house arrest during the military dictatorship.
