Nadal rolls at Indian Wells

Spain’s Rafael Nadal, the third seed, rolled over Igor Sijsling of The Netherlands 64, 62 at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California.

“He’s a player who has improved a lot in recent years,” Nadal said, referring to his next opponent, American Donald Young. “He is playing really well and winning many matches. He’s going to be a difficult opponent, but I expect to be ready.”

Switzerland’s Roger Federer, the No. 2 seed, upended Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman 64, 62.

Federer will have a chance for revenge in the third round when he takes on Italy’s Andreas Seppi, who upset the Swiss great at the Australian Open.

Dutch player Robin Haase, who is ranked 104th in the world, pulled off a huge upset himself on Sunday, knocking off 2014 Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, the No. 7 seed, 63, 36, 63.

In other men’s action on Sunday, Canada’s Milos Raonic defeated Italy’s Simone Bolelli 63, 64, while Spain’s Tommy Robredo beat Kazakhstan’s Andrey Golubev 64, 67 (57), 64.

On the women’s side, Britain’s Heather Watson upset Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska, the No. 7 seed, 64, 64 and American Sloane Stephens beat Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova 76 (74), 16, 64.

American Serena Williams, the top seed, crushed Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas 62, 60.
