Norwegian police respond to false bomb threat at Oslo University
The Norwegian police seized and removed a suspicious package made to look like a bomb on Wednesday morning at the University of Oslo, the same spot where a security guard was shot at by two assailants earlier in the day.
Oslo police Chief of Staff John Fredriksen explained in a news conference that the package did not contain any explosive materials, but noted that they were awaiting confirmation from a residue analysis.
The package, clearly designed to provoke fear, was found in front of the physics building of the university, the same place where a security guard was shot just hours earlier, at 3:00 a.m.
Police forces evacuated and cordoned off the area, while investigations continued regarding the security guard who was slightly injured by a bullet to the chest, thanks to his wearing a bulletproof vest, a measure implemented following a separate shooting at the university less than a year ago.
According to the testimony of the guard, the gunman was white, 1.75 meters (5 feet 7 inches) tall, spoke English and was wearing a red hat and gray shoes.
A temporary nofly zone has also been established by security forces within a 3.7kilometer (2mile) radius of the University of Oslo.
Authorities started a criminal investigation regarding the attempted murder of the security guard earlier in the day, confiscating security cameras footage and looking into a black leather jacket that was found at the scene, thought to belong to one of the attackers, according to police.
