A Palestinian man was shot dead Tuesday by Israeli in the West Bank on the day Palestinians mark the tenyear anniversary of the death of their iconic leader, Palestinian Liberation Organization Chairman Yasser Arafat.

The dead man was identified as Imad Muhamad Jawabre, aged 21. He was killed during an exchange of gunfire at the alAroub refugee camp in the southern West Bank city of Hebron, camp spokesman Ali Jawabre told Efe.

Sources at alMizan hospital told the Palestinian news agency Maan that Jawabre was shot in the chest and arrived at the medical center in critical condition. He died shortly afterwards.

An Israeli army spokesman told Efe that the camp was the scene of violent clashes in which some 200 Palestinians armed with improvised weapons were involved, but gave no further details.

Clashes continued early in the afternoon in Hebron, a city with strong presence of the Israeli army, tasked with protecting the hundreds of Jewish settlers living among a predominantly Palestinian population.

Israeli police in Hebron also arrested Jamil alHashlomun, the brother of Maher alHashlomun, who allegedly stabbed a 25yearold woman to death and wounding two others, near a Jewish settlement on the West Bank.

The alleged attacker was admitted to hospital in Jerusalem after being shot by a security officer in the settlement.

Israeli troops also wounded a young Palestinian man near the town of Khursa.

According to Israeli public radio, about 150 Palestinian demonstrators gathered on Tuesday at the intersection of the West Bank village and threw stones at settlers’ vehicles.

Also, two other Palestinians were wounded in clashes in the village of Beit Furik, east of Nablus, Maaan reported.

In Nablus, the father and brothers of the Palestinian youth who allegedly stabbed yesterday a 20yearold Israeli soldier in a Tel Aviv train station have been taken into custody, according to sources on the military committee of alAskar camp, where the suspect lived.

The alleged perpetrator was identified as Nour alDin abu Hashiyeh, aged 18. The soldier later died from his wounds.

Israeli police deployed more personnel in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, having recently raised the alert level.

In the last two weeks, four Israelis and an Ecuadorian citizen have died in four attacks by Palestinians, amid a climate of increasing tension.
