Queen Elizabeth II said concerned by monarchy’s future under Charles

A new book about Britain’s Prince Charles reveals internal conflicts inside Buckingham Palace, highlighting the fact that Queen Elizabeth II is concerned that Britons might not be ready for her son’s style of ruling when he ascends to the throne.

The book, entitled “Charles: The Heart of a King”, was written by journalist Catherine Mayer, who depended on her connections with the Crown Prince and his staff. Extracts from the book were published by Mayer on her official website.

According to Mayer, Elizabeth, who will turn 89 next April, is concerned about the different style of monarchy Charles will likely follow when he succeeds her.

The queen’s eldest son and heir to the throne, the Prince of Wales, is known for being very committed to causes such as climate change and architecture, a tendency that has earned him no small criticism on a number of occasions.

Elizabeth II has never given an interview or expressed an outspoken opinion regarding sensitive issues, arguing that in her capacity as a queen who reigns and does not govern, she is excluded from debates taking place in the country.

On the other hand, the Prince of Wales, 66, could not resist making his views known whenever a debate has to do with defending nature or opposing the type of modern architecture that is not suitaaable, in his view, a capital city like London.

In her book, Mayer emphasizes that the activity of Prince Charles would give rise to a “potential new model of kingship” after Queen Elizabeth passes away.

The author added “Some courtiers and the sovereign herself fear that neither the crown nor its subjects will tolerate the shock of the new.”

Mayer also explains that Charles expressed his concerns to her regarding the issues that will affect Britain over the long term when he was interviewed by Mayer.

“I only take on the most difficult challenges, because I want to raise aspirations and recreate hope from hopelessness and health from deprivation”, the Prince of Wales said.

Charles’s father, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, is among his harshest critics, as he believes that his son is behaving selfishly by placing his passions ahead of his royal duties, according to the new book.

Mayer added that in recent years, in the halls and private rooms of Buckingham Palace, there is growing anxiety about what to do when the inevitable happens, meaning the death of Queen Elizabeth II, who ascended to the throne in 1952.

The journalist confirmed that Prince Charles is planning to follow a new style of kingship.

The book also reveals that the court is plagued with internal conflicts, so much so that some courtiers compare it to the novel “Wolf Hall” by author Hilary Mantel, who depicts a court riddled with opportunism, palace intrigues and betrayal during the reign of King Henry VIII (14911547).

“Charles: The Heart of a King” explains that the staff working with Charles call him “the boss”, despite his being seen by them as an insecure person, while other employees consider him disappointing.

The choices made by Prince Charles have not been always been wise ones as he has a tendency to listen to people that tell him only what he wants to hear rather than the truth, according to Mayer.

As described in Mayer’s book the prince is a person who has difficulty in controlling his numerous charity organizations and business interests, adding that many of the disputes in the royal court are due to Charles’s inability to create specific positions for members of his personal staff.
