Robert Gesink takes stage 14 of Spain’s Vuelta, Quintana retains red jersey
Dutch rider Robert Gesink (LottoNLJumbo) won stage 14 of the 2016 Vuelta a España on Saturday, a 196 kilometer (121 mile) mountainous stretch from UrdaxDantxarinea to AubisqueGourette .
The Dutchman reached the Col d’Aubisque summit finish in 5 hours, 43 minutes and 24 seconds after tackling the stage’s tough climb.
French rider Kenny Elissonde (FDJ) came in 7 seconds behind him and Russian Egor Silin (Katusha) 9 seconds behind, finishing second and third respectively.
Colombia’s Nairo Quintana (Movistar) continues to lead in the overall standings and thus keeps hold of the red jersey with a time of 58:41:40.
Britain’s Chris Froome (Team Sky) is in second place, 54 seconds behind him, and Australian Johan Esteban Chaves (OricaBikeExchange) is third, 2 minutes and 1 second behind.
Sunday’s stage 15 takes the riders along a 118.5 km (74 mile) mountainous route from Sabiñánigo to Formigal.
The race covers a total of 3,315.4 km (2,060 mile) and is made up of 21 stages.
