Romo will try to play for Cowboys against Eagles

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo’s status for his team’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles next Sunday remains unclear.

Romo received an epidural shot to relieve the pain and swelling from the back injury he sustained last Sunday in the Cowboys’ 2423 win over the Washington Redskins.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said on his weekly radio show on 105.3 FM “The Fan” that he was not ruling Romo out of the game, but backup Kyle Orton would be ready if he had to play.

“He is going through treatment,” Jones said. “If that treatment has the positive implications that it certainly has a chance to have, he should not be ruled in any way for of this game.”

Sunday’s game will decide who wins the National Football Conference’s Eastern Division, with a loss preventing the Cowboys from making the playoffs.

“We’re in as good of shape under these circumstances as you possibly could be in,” Jones said. “I have every reason to think, if needed, Kyle Orton could step out there and really do a good job for us. We’ve planned on that very event.”

The Cowboys, meanwhile, picked up some insurance by signing veteran quarterback Jon Kitna as the third QB on the roster.

Kitna played for Dallas from 2009 to 2011, backing up Romo. He started nine games in 2010 when Romo sustained a broken collarbone and retired after the 2011 season.

Dallas tried out free agent quarterbacks David Carr, John Skelton, Tyler Thigpen, Caleb Hanie and Richard Bartel, but the team decided to go with Kitna because he was familiar with the offense.

Kitna spent 15 seasons in the NFL, playing for the Cowboys, Detroit Lions, Cincinnati Bengals and Seattle Seahawks,

The 41yearold Kitna started 124 NFL games and passed for 29,745 yards and 169 touchdowns, with 165 interceptions, in his career.
