At least five people died in the last 24 hours from the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, or MERS, in Riyadh, the Saudi Health Ministry announced in a statement on Monday.

An additional seven cases were reported in Riyadh and the nearby town of alZulfi.

The total death toll from MERS recorded in Saudi Arabia since 2012 has thus risen to 492, while 62 others are still being treated.

Eight cases have been quarantined in their homes, while 592 patients recovered after receiving the necessary medical treatment.

The World Health Organization commented that the spread of coronavirus is “very worrying,” but current conditions do not warrant declaring a public health emergency in an international scale.
