Serena Williams starts Wimbledon campaign by eliminating Gasparyan

U.S. tennis player Serena Williams, ranked No. 1 in the world, won her debut match in Wimbledon the Russia’s Margarita Gasparyan.

The 64, 61 victory in one hour and 22 minutes secured the star’s safe passage to the second round of the third Grand Slam of the season.

Serena has won 21 Grand Slam titles in her career, including five Wimbledon tournaments, in 2000, 2002, 2008, 2009 and 2012.

Gasparyan, 20, surprised the U.S. player in the middle of the first set, breaking Serena’s serve and taking a 31 lead, but Serena came back to win the set 64, taking the second set for the match with her unstoppable right hand aces.

Serena Williams will play the second round against Hungary’s Timea Babos, who eliminated the Czech Petra Cetkovska on Monday.
