Serena Williams through to semifinals after beating Romania’s Simona Halep

Serena Williams advanced to the semifinals of the US Open Wednesday, after beating fifth seeded Romanian Simona Halep 62, 46 and 63.

The number one seeded, who is seeking her seventh title in the tournament, will face the Czech Karolina Pliskova in the semifinal, who earlier beat Croatia’s Ana Konjuh 62, 62.

Williams, who has now won 309 matches in Grand Slam tournaments, two more than Swiss legend Roger Ferderer, used her physical strength and powerful serves to secure her win.

“I am very happy to have reached the semifinals (...) I look forward to it, I have nothing to lose,” Williams said after the match.
