‘Spotlight’ tells the story of the investigation by The Boston Globe newspaper, which uncovered a Catholic church conspiracy that allowed priests to get away with sexually abusing minors.

In his acceptance speech, McCarthy said the film “gave a voice” to the survivors of those abuses and noted that the Oscar “amplifies” the message.

Producers Nicole Rocklin and Blye Pagon said ‘Spotlight’ would not be in the Oscars if it had not been “for the heroic efforts” of the journalists behind The Boston Globe investigation.

‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, directed by George Miller, was the biggest winner of the night, taking the awards for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.

‘The Revenant’ by Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu walked away with three awards: Best Director, Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, and Best Photography for Emmanuel ‘El Chivo’ Lubezki.
