Texans cut veteran safety Ed Reed

The Houston Texans have released veteran safety Ed Reed, who was the struggling team’s biggest offseason acquisition.

After the Texans lost their seventh consecutive game on Sunday night, Reed said the team was “outplayed and outcoached” at certain points during the loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Interim head coach Wade Phillips was not happy on Monday with Reed’s statements.

“Everyone has an opinion. I’ll keep mine in house,” Phillips, who had to step in after head coach Gary Kubiak suffered a “ministroke” at halftime of Houston’s loss to Indianapolis on Nov. 3, said.

The 35yearold Reed signed a threeyear contract in late March worth $15 million, with $6 million in guaranteed money.

The ninetime Pro Bowler and future Hall of Famer, however, lost his starting job to Shiloh Keo in the Texans’ secondary.

Reed’s contract will affect the Texans’ salary cap in the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Reed, a former University of Miami star who was taken by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft, played in seven games for Houston and had just 14 tackles, no interceptions and no forced fumbles.
