Tsipras says closing borders will not resolve refugee crisis

Share

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, said on Tuesday that a solution to the refugee crisis will not be achieved by threatening Greece by closing borders, but through searching for “European solutions” based on “solidarity” and the fair distribution of refugees arriving to the Greek soil among the countries of the European Union.

Tsipras said in a press conference with President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, after their meeting on Tuesday, that a number of E.U. member states proposed national solutions, while they threaten Greece to close their borders.

Tsipras expressed his confidence that this approach will lead Europe to a dead end, because looking for someone to blame does not solve problems.

Tusk visited Athens on Tuesday as part of a tour of European capitals to reach an agreement before the summit in Brussels on Thursday and Friday, in which one of the highlights will be managing the refugee crisis.

Tusk noted that the exclusion of Greece from Schengen is not a solution, as it would not end the Syrian conflict or curb the influx of refugees.

Tusk added that the solution is to strengthen the external borders of Europe and stressed that Greece must make more effort in this regard and Europe must support it.
