Uggie, the Jack Russell Terrier which accompanied Oscarwinner Jean Dujardin in “The Artist” (2011) along with Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson in “Water for Elephants,” died last Friday in Los Angeles, California at the age of 13 years.

According to reports on Wednesday on the Internet portal TMZ, Uggie’s owner, Omar Von Mueller, made the “difficult” decision to put the silver screen pooch to sleep to end to his suffering caused by a rapidly growing case of prostate cancer.

The canine actor’s coach, Sarah Clifford, told TMZ that the dog was “a perfect little terrier,” full of energy, and that she would “forever hold him dearly in my heart.”

Uggie’s role in director Michel Hazanavicius’s “The Artist,” which won five Oscars, earned him the Palm Dog Award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.

The famous terrier had several other roles in film and television, as well as commercials, including one for Nintendo.
