Wawrinka, Del Potro to meet in US Open quarterfinal

Swiss thirdseed Stan Wawrinka defeated Ukraine’s Illya Marchenko 64, 61, 67 (5), 63 here Monday to advance to the quarterfinals of the US Open.

Wawrinka, 31, played his most consistent tennis of this year’s tournament against the 28yearold Marchenko, who was making his firstever appearance in the fourth round at Flushing Meadows.

After winning the first two sets, Wawrinka was broken while serving for the match and Marchenko ultimately prevailed in the tiebreak to stay alive.

Marchenko broke Wawrinka again early in the fourth set, but the Swiss competitor came roaring back to win.

Wawrinka’s opponent in the quarterfinals will be Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, who advanced earlier Tuesday when opponent Dominic Thiem withdrew due to injury five games into the second set of their match.

The Argentine, who won the 2009 US Open, has beaten Wawrinka in four of their six previous meetings.
