The Swiss player survived four break points and broke Verdasco twice.

Ferrer, the men’s 11th seed, had a much easier time of it against Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov, who was trailing 65 in the first set when he retired due to an injury.

Another Spaniard, 16thseeded Feliciano Lopez, won in similar fashion, falling behind 34 in the first set to Borna Coric before the Croatian was forced to retire because of injury.

Halep rolled over Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens 60, 62 to claim her spot in the second round.

Suarez Navarro, playing in her ninth US Open, dominated Teliana Pereira of Brazil 60, 60 to advance.
