Sophie GrégoireTrudeau, wife of new Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, surprised everyone when she began singing in the middle of a public event in honor of the late U.S. activist Martin Luther King, according to Canadian broadcaster CTV News.

GrégoireTrudeau, in the presence of TV cameras, media and around 200 people gathered in Ottawa City Hall on Monday to commemorate the life of the American activist, spontaneously began to sing a song that she wrote for her daughter, ElleGrace.

“This is not planned. Trust me,” said GrégoireTrudeau, before singing the song, “Smile Back at Me”.

The prime minister’s wife said she decided to sing after listening to other performances at the event.

“I’ll take a step forward. And I am going to sing you a song that I wrote for my daughter ElleGrace at a moment when I was going through a difficult time and where I reminded myself of all the hope that there is in one’s life,” she said.

GrégoireTrudeau’s performance came two days after The New York Times published an article, stating that Canada has become increasingly popular around the world because of people like Trudeau.

Trudeau came to power in October last year, ending nearly 10 years of Stephen Harper’s Conservative government.
