Community Leadership

Launched by The Times in 1998, Reading by 9 is a multiyear initiative aimed at helping Southern California kindergarten through third-grade students read at grade level by the age of nine. The program is supported by over 50 business, civic, education, media and philanthropic organizations. Reading by 9 has collected more than 4.3 million books to support reading programs and school libraries at elementary schools throughout Southern California. More than 1.6 million copies of a free, bilingual Parent Reading Guide are distributed each year.
The Los Angeles Times Family Fund, established in 2000, is a charitable fund of the McCormick Tribune Foundation and receives foundation-matching dollars for its Summer Camp and Holiday campaigns. In 2007, these campaigns raised more than $2.9 million, including matching dollars from the McCormick Tribune Foundation, to support programs benefiting disadvantaged children and youth. All funds are distributed to organizations providing food, clothing and shelter; early childhood development and literacy programs; services for developmentally delayed and disabled children; at-risk prevention; and summer camp programs.
The nationally recognized Times in Education (TIE) program makes newspapers and learning materials available to Southern California teachers of grades kindergarten through adult education. Each year approximately 1 million students participate in TIE. Programs are available at no cost to teachers due to corporate sponsorships and subscriber donations.
