It's turtle nesting season

Summer is the season for turtles to lumber onto Florida's beaches for nesting -- and nature centers up and down the coast are educating residents with turtle walks, says marine conservationist Kirt Rusenko in Boca Raton.

"The more people know, the more people can help," he says. "They learn what dangers turtles are facing." Turtle nesting has been declining in recent years.

On turtle walks, wear dark clothing and do not bring flash cameras. Rusenko says video cameras with night shot capture the turtles well.

Most nature centers have presentations with videos, artifacts and research in addition to the turtle walks. Because of the popularity of these events, many nature centers require advance registration beginning this month.
