At a new conference on Easter Sunday 2000, a tearful Marisleysis Gonzalez, right, Elian's 21-year-old cousin who has been a surrogate mother to child, shows the media an Associated Press photo of a gun-toting agent reaching for Elian as fisherman Donato Dalrymple, who had rescued the boy at sea, clutching Elian in a closet at the family's Miami home. This, she said, "is the face of fear." Next to her is Lazaro Gonzales, her father and Elian's great-uncle. In the background is Republican Sen. Bob Smith of New Hamshire. The angry and tearful Miami relatives demanded the child back and asked to be able to visit him. Neither occurred.
