Blues guitarist Bennie Smith, Sept. 10 Bennie Smith, a guitarist and St. Louis blues legend who played with stars like Chuck Berry and Ike and Tina Turner, died on Sunday, Sept. 10 following a heart attack. He was 72. According to Wikipedia, Smith worked as a session man on many recordings over the years, and has two original albums: 'The Urban Soul of Bennie Smith' (1993) and 'Shook Up' (Fedora Records - 2001)). In a notable 1958 session, Smith was invited to contribute on what would be Tina Turner's first recording, 'Boxtop'. The song featured Ike Turner with 'Little Ann' on backing vocals, and Smith on electric guitar. In addition, he has played with such guitar players as B.B. King and Grant Green.
