Former U.S. Rep. Allen West issued a stern warning Wednesday to protesters he said are taking things too far when it comes to his wife, Angela West, a trustee at Florida Atlantic University.
Here’s what West posted Wednesday on Facebook:
I completely understand the Alinsky tactics and have no issue with the insidious and incessant personal attacks by the left against me. However, I am warning you, end your harassment of my wife Angela. The students from Florida Atlantic University who have gone to my wife's office, stalked her at the FAU Board of Trustee meetings, and sent letters to her company headquarters, end it now. This is not a threat, it is a promise that if Angela calls and tells me of one more incident, you will face me, the side of me that you do not want to see. My wife Angela is an American citizen and if you believe that you can intimidate her to surrender her freedoms you are mistaken. Those left wing groups and lawyers associated with these individuals supporting their antics, I recommend you disassociate yourself. How dare you animals attack my wife and her professional reputation. This is your one and only advisory notice.
He sent a similar, albeit shorter, message on Twitter:
To FAU students stalking my wife at Bd of Trustee mtgs, end it now. If u believe you can intimidate her, u are mistaken. Nxt time u face me.
West’s fans supported his remarks in their own tweets and on Facebook, where more than 4,000 people had commented within a few hours of his original post.
Pure evil has no bounds! Thank you from those of us who have no loudspeaker - you are incredible.
The support is overwhelming 4 you & Angela on FB & throughout social networks. We are with you & will help however we can!
We are behind you Allen, there is no excuse to Harrass a Politician's spouse...evn if you don't have the same iews.God Bless you Angela.I will Pray that our Savior sends a Mighty band of Angels to surround you and He will.
West didn’t specify what threats his wife has been facing.
But the university’s leadership has been in turmoil over a string of recent controversies that have generated protests for and against decisions made at FAU. The trustees had a contentious meeting on Tuesday, according to this report from my colleague Scott Travis.
West, a Republican with a strong base of support in the tea party movement, served one term representing Broward and Palm Beach counties. He was defeated in his attempt to win a second term last year.
Here’s what I wrote about Angela West’s appointment in May 2011:
One of the names jumped out on the list of Gov. Rick Scott's three new appointees to the Florida Atlantic University Board of Trustees: Angela M. Graham-West.
She was listed by Scott this way:
"Graham-West, 51, of Plantation, is a financial advisor for Raymond James and Associates Inc. She succeeds Nancy Blosser and is appointed for a term beginning May 24, 2011, and ending January 6, 2016."
That omits one vital fact. She's the wife of freshman U.S. Rep. Allen West, R-Plantation. The congressman has frequently praised the governor’s performance.
She works as a financial planner and has a master's in business administration and a doctorate.
The other two appointees are Abdol Moabery of Delray Beach, president and chief executive officer of GA Telesis LLC, and Julius "Butch" Teske of Vero Beach, a retired assistant superintendent of human resources for the School District of Indian River County.
The positions don’t pay. The appointments are subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate.
Several hours after West's Facebook posting, the Stop Owlcatraz group, which was protesting a $6 million gift to the university from a private prison company (since withdrawn) issued an email response saying it's West who's doing the threatening.
The FAU administration should issue Allen West a restraining order barring him from all FAU campuses, and should release a statement affirming their commitment to students’ and the greater FAU community’s rights to public safety and free speech.
Allen West alleges students are "harassing" his wife, Angela West. Members of the Stop Owlcatraz Coalition, in February and March, met privately with most of the members of the FAU Board of Trustees, including Angela West. As public officials and the trustees of our university, they have a duty to be accessible and accountable to the constituencies they serve.
She agreed to a March 18 meeting at her Raymond James office in Fort Lauderdale. At that meeting, Angela became rude and aggressive and students walked out of the meeting as she began yelling at them.
Students attended yesterday's Board of Trustees meeting to hear the President and all the Trustees, not just West. There, she harassed FAU students and instructed two FAU police officers to question them about the meeting (they refused to do so). Allen and Angela West are harassing and threatening FAU students, not the other way around.Copyright © 2015, Los Angeles Times
