3. RB John Avery, 1998, No. 29

If the heights of coach Jimmy Johnson’s renowned draft doings came in Dallas when he maneuvered upward to pick Emmitt Smith, perhaps his biggest wheeling-and-dealing mistake was in 1998 when, with a major need for a downfield-stretching receiver, he traded down from the 19th pick to 29. Randy Moss was selected 21st by Minnesota and had a Hall of Fame career. Avery, on the other hand, never made sense. Undersized and without any quickness and wiggle once he had the ball, Avery flamed out quickly and was gone from Miami after 17 games.
