Large-school baseball: Jose Mesa Jr., Flanagan

Year: Senior Position: Pitcher Statistics: 9-2, 1.13 ERA, 134 strikeouts, 5 complete games, .450 BA, 25 RBI, 2 HR, 8 runs Season highlights: A two-year varsity starter, Mesa pitched two no-hitters against district foe West Broward this season. In the regional tournament, he nearly did it again, holding Douglas to just two hits and striking out 12 to help the Falcons earn a 6-1 regional quarterfinal win. Comment: Coming into the season, Mesa's biggest individual goals were to improve on last year's numbers. He did that and emerged as one of the most dominant arms in Broward County. The son of former major leaguer Jose Mesa, Mesa Jr. has signed with Seminole State College."He was our big-time pitcher, our workhorse and he knew that from the get-go. He wanted the big games and he put the team on his shoulders. He broke the school record in strikeouts and was really a bright spot on our team," said Flanagan coach Ray Evans. Athlete's comment: "I wanted our team to get farther than last year, but even though we fell short, it was a great run overall and I'm happy with what we accomplished. Now I want to keep improving and keep my velocity up, constantly. I want to improve my control on my breaking pitches and grow as an overall player and person. I just want to help my team do well."
