On April 28, 2002, Ana Maria Angel and Nelson Portobanco, both 18, were taking a midnight stroll on South Beach when they were forced into a pickup truck at gunpoint. Five men, according to investigators, abducted the couple robbed them and raped Angel in the back seat. Two men forced Portobanco from the truck near Sample Road and I-95, stabbed and beat him. Apparently believing him dead, they continued north with Angel, shooting her and dumping her body in some bushes off I-95 in Boca Raton. Portobanco managed to flag down a passing motorist and set police on a search for Angel, whose body was found the following day. She had been shot in the head. All five men were apprehended, indicted on murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, gang rape and robbery charges.
