Energy-efficient light bulbs. (Sun Sentinel, file)

A London company called Hulger makes an artistic compact fluorescent light bulb called Plumen, which is meant to be used without a lamp shade or with a transparent shade. CFLs and LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, can last nine and 25 times longer, respectively, than incandescents, which last almost up to a year assuming you burn them about three hours a day, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
