TALLAHASSEE–Senate President Don Gaetz said Tuesday he wouldn’t stop Senate committees from taking up controversial legislation, including a domestic partner registry proposal or gun control measures.

He said he would vote “no” on a bill (SB 196) sponsored by Sen. Eleanor Sobel, D-Hollywood, that would allow domestic partnerships across the state, but he won’t stop her committee from discussing it.

“We don’t set agendas for committees in the president’s office,” Gaetz, R-Niceville, said.

Gaetz also made it clear that he would not vote for any of the many bills seeking to restrict or regulate gun ownership. He said his idea of gun control is a “steady aim.”
