For the second consecutive year, a total of six boys basketball teams from Broward and Palm Beach counties are heading to Lakeland for the FHSAA state semifinals.
Deerfield Beach (Class 8A), Blanche Ely (7A), American Heritage (5A), St. Andrew’s (4A), Coral Springs Christian (3A) and Grandview Prep (2A) all earned a spot by winning their regional final Saturday night.
Ely will be looking to become the third boys basketball team from Broward to win back-to-back titles while capturing the fourth title in program history. Dillard won four consecuive from 2000-03, and more recently, Pine Crest won in 2008 and 2009.
Heritage and Grandview Prep are hoping to avenge state semifinal losses in Lakeland last year. Grandview, making its seventh consecutive appearance in the state semis, finished state runner-up in 2008, ’09 and ’11.
St. Andrew’s hopes to break through after finishing state runner-up in 1995 and 2006 under current coach John O’Connell. Coral Springs Christian is making the first state semifinals appearance in program history.
Broward and Palm Beach counties combined to win three state championships at the boys basketball finals in 2011 (Dwyer 5A, Sagemont 2A, Summit Christian 1A) and in 2001 (St. Thomas Aquinas 5A, Dillard 6A, Benjamin 2A).
“I think there’s a real good chance we’re going to see a couple of titles come back to Palm beach and Broward," O'Connell said.Copyright © 2015, Los Angeles Times
