Award winning South African jazz bassist Sipho Gumede died in Durban, South Africa, on Monday, July 26, 2004, of lung cancer. Gumede played with greats such as Hugh Masekela, Harry Belafonte, Letta Mbulu and Caipheus Semenya. He toured the world creating his own brand of music -- a fusion of jazz heavily influenced by Wes Montgomery along with traditional African music -- that was internationally recognized during the long fight to end apartheid.
