Retired Air Force Col. Lawrence E. Roberts, one of the nation's first black military pilots and the father of ABC news anchor Robin Roberts, died on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, in Biloxi, Miss., and was buried with full military honors. He was 81. He was a graduate of the 44K class of the prestigious Tuskegee Airmen. His first assignment was the pilot training program at Tuskegee Army Air Field where he graduated as a Second Lieutenant. He was assigned to the 477th Medium Bombardment Group, and later the 332nd fighter wing. He later served in Vietnam.
