posts he is among the multitude of former
players who have seen the damage incurred during their playing days manifest itself in devastating fashion.
On a Facebook page entitled Ray Lucas NFL Official PAST Page, Lucas, who played for the Dolphins in 2001-02, has written for the past five months about his battle to break his dependency on pain-killing medication, his most recent writing centered on his entrance into a Tampa-area rehab clinic.
The entries begin on Sept. 15, 2010, following a neck surgery and span to an entry early Monday morning, which reads: "The end of day 2 detox. The symptoms of detox are taking hold ,I am in a lot of pain & everything hurts. This gets me scared. This place is amazing, having another player, Randy Grimes, who has been through it by my side is a difference maker. Today in a session for the first time in my life I was dealing with the emotional impact of my departure from the NFL .This is the start of the fight & I AM WILLING TO FIGHT!"
Randy Grimes is a former
offensive lineman who played from 1983-1992 and his own battle with painkillers has been well-documented. Lucas played in the NFL from 1996-2003.
