Robert A. "Bob" Butterworth, was appointed Secretary of the Florida Department of Children and Families on January 2, 2007 by Governor Charlie Crist. Prior to joining the Department, Mr. Butterworth served as the Dean of the St. Thomas University School of Law from May 2003. At that time, Mr. Butterworth was serving as a senior judge in the State of Florida Judiciary. He previously devoted most of his career to public service, including serving four terms as Florida's Attorney General. As Florida's Attorney General, Mr. Butterworth received national attention for his success in enforcing victim and consumer protection, environmental, civil rights and anti-trust laws. He was a leader in the multi-state litigation against the tobacco industry and was once voted the top Attorney General in the nation by his peers. He was responsible for the passage of numerous Florida statutes and was the impetus behind amendments to Florida's Constitution expanding open government to all three branches of government and reforming the state's antiquated Cabinet system. Prior to his election as Attorney General, Mr. Butterworth was in the private practice of law. He previously served as a county judge, circuit judge, prosecutor and Broward County sheriff. Twice, governors called upon him to serve as a troubleshooter: Once, to head the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, the parent agency of the Florida Highway Patrol, to reform that police force and implement diversity into its ranks, and, again, to serve as interim mayor of a South Florida city plagued by political corruption. Early in his legal career, Mr. Butterworth served as an adjunct professor at the Nova University Graduate School of Criminal Justice and served on that university's national faculty. Mr. Butterworth received his B.S.B.A. degree from the University of Florida and his J.D. from the University of Miami Law School. He also did advanced studies in international law at the University of Miami Graduate School of Law and holds honorary doctorates from Stetson University, Nova Southeastern University, Florida A&M University and Barry University. Mr. Butterworth is currently an attorney with the law firm of Fowler White Boggs, P.A. in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
