A section of the space shuttle Challenger, destroyed 73 seconds after launch on Jan. 28, 1986, is lowered into an abandoned missile silo on the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in 1987. The silos serve as permanent storage facilities for the Challenger debris, which will be stored in such a way that it can be readily retrieved if necessary.
